Manual on military leadership

Being an effective Leader doesn’t come without some inherent risks. But the opportunity to live your life with passion separates you from the pack.

Carolina Business Coach’s 9 Essential Leadership Behaviors

1.     Know yourself -  Be real about your strengths - Be clear about your challenges

2.     Know your people – Know their strengths and challenges too

3.     Work on being a master of your business competencies - Take steps to develop your skills and the skills of your people

4.     Set S.M.A.R.T. goals & priorities

5.     Execute – Action and follow through

6.     Delegate effectively

7.     Engage – Acknowledge – and  make positive clear communication a priority – ambiguity causes countless problems and issues

8.     Surround yourself with people who will make you even better than who you are

9.     Get a Coach or a Mentor and create a Master Mind Group

Some of us believe that we should have the natural gifts of a good business head, good leadership skills, good sales skills.  Do you think you could grow in these areas if you could understand what you are doing that is effective and what you could be working on to improve? A DISC behavioral assessment can be an awakening into knowing what makes you tick, and how you can work more effectively with others.   I have spoken with potential clients who tell me "I just thought if I worked hard I would be recognized for a job well done."  It takes more than doing your job in order to keep your job as well as move ahead in a company.  If you've been reading this newsletter, you know I talk about the DISC assessment all the time and for good reason: it is a porthole that will forever change the way you look at your performance in life.

“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”                                                St. Francis of Assisi

THE BIGGER PICTURE An old man and his son worked a small farm, with only one horse to pull the plow. One day, the horse ran away.  “How terrible,” sympathized the neighbors. “What bad luck.”   “Who knows whether it is bad luck or good luck,” the farmer replied.  A week later, the horse returned from the mountains, leading five wild mares into the barn. “What wonderful luck!” said the neighbors. “Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?” answered the old man.  The next day, the son, trying to tame one of the horses, fell and broke his leg.  “How terrible. What bad luck!”   Bad luck? Good Luck?”  Who really knows for  sure. The army came to all the farms and took the young men for war, but the farmer’s son was of no use to them, so he was spared.  “Good luck? Bad luck?"

From “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior”   by Dan Millman

What is the lesson here? It’s about shifting our thinking and becoming aware of the continual stream of judgments we all make throughout the day

Choice – We can whine & complain or we can choose to live a life that makes us proud and fulfilled. And I always tell my clients that we don’t have to do it all on our own.  Everywhere there are teachers and supporters to take us to the next level. Henry Ford believed in the wisdom of Dale Carnegie  Bill Gates surrounds himself with people who have experienced failure as well as success. What philosophies, role models, teachers and coaches have you chosen to surround yourself with in your life?

What did you set out to achieve in 2006? The year is half over; are you where you thought you'd be? Are you lagging behind by a little or a lot?  Have you motivated others to step up and do something extraordinary? Are you exhilarated by knowing you can face any challenge and conquer it? Have you set up a support system for success? If not, invest in your future.

Coaching sessions are a small investment in creating the self you want to be.  Think of how much more you could be, how much more success you could generate – if you could acquire more wisdom, more strategies, more people know-how? Ready for Success?
