"We
have learned how to make a living, but not how to make a
life."
--George Carlin
We
have come to see each New Year as a time to wipe the slate
clean and start over. We resolve to change jobs, lose
weight, find love, spend less money, make more money, and
be with family in more meaningful ways. So why aren't we
all rich, thin, balanced, madly in love and satisfied with
every aspect of our lives?
The
piece below was written by a woman named Portia Nelson and
is titled: Autobiography in Five Short Chapters.
Chapter
1
There
is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I
fall in.
I
am lost. I am hopeless.
It
isn't my fault.
It
takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter
2
I
walk down the same street.
There
is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I
pretend I don't see it.
I
fall in again.
I
can't believe I am in the same place.
But
it isn't my fault.
It
still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter
3
I
walk down the same street.
There
is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I
fall in. it's a habit.
My
eyes are open. I know where I am.
It
is my fault.
I
get out immediately.
Chapter
4
I
walk down the same street.
There
is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I
walk around it.
Chapter
5
I
walk down another street.
Harvey
’s observations:
Change
doesn't just happen. We have to commit to it.
Work towards it. And realize that a good outcome
takes focus. I often borrow this definition of
insanity: "doing the same thing over and over again
and expecting a different outcome".
We
need to let go of our limiting beliefs and find new
information to feed our brains. It is the way to
create new realities for ourselves.
