WHAT IS COACHING?
In simple terms, coaching helps people get 'unstuck'. If you've ever felt that you were dead-ending in a job, locked in a hopeless maze of politics, unsure of which career path to take, overwhelmed by tasks, these are just a few of the issues that coaching is able to help you process and act on. Why? Someone I know once put it this way: we all play tapes in our head, it's sometimes called your 'mind chatter'. The experiences we have are the frame of reference around which we build our 'mind chatter' i.e., the conversations we have with ourselves. When we are trying to solve problems or achieve a goal, we are only 'as good as' the content of our mind chatter. If we had many good role models and teachers for success, it would make sense that we absorb that learning and can become successful in our own right. If we don't have good role models, we might not have the best 'tools' to be successful. Our mind chatter can become circular as we struggle to solve, and continually wonder why our way of doing things isn't attaining the desired results. Our 'mind chatter' can only play back what it knows. Coaching objectively and strategically introduces new concepts to help you 'revise' the mind chatter, if you are willing. In this way we can help a coaching client move forward if he is willing to learn fresh ways of approaching the same old problems (they tend to recur, have you noticed?)Coaching is an interactive process that helps us break out of the same old thinking, and helps individuals and organizations to develop more rapidly and produce more satisfying results. No matter what field you are in, coaching can help you set better goals, take more action, make better decisions--and more fully use your natural strengths. While the coach provides feedback and an objective perspective, the client is responsible for taking the steps to produce the results he or she desires.

What coaching does NOT do: Coaching does not focus directly on relieving psychological pain or treating cognitive or emotional disorders. Some clients are in a depressed state or have marital issues that would be better served by a psychologist or psychiatrist. If a coach feels that a client's well being would be best served by another kind of professional, he or she should recommend this before coaching.

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started". Mark Twain

* I once heard a story of a carpenter ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the business. The contractor was sorry to see this good worker go and asked if he would build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said "yes" but in time it became obvious that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the carpenter the front door key and said, "this is your house, it is my gift to you". The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house he would have done it all so differently.

So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting in less than our best. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently; but we can't go back.

You are the carpenter of your own life.

What do you want to achieve? 2005 is half over; are you where you thought you'd be? Are you lagging behind by a little? Alot? Have you motivated others to step up and do something extraordinary? Are you exhilarated by knowing you can face any challenge and conquer it? Have you set up a support system for success?

Invest in your future. Coaching sessions are an investment in yourself. Three sessions per month,         e-mails and short phone calls between sessions at $400 per month can help you for the rest of your life. If you say 'you can't afford it?' Think of how much money you could make if you had more wisdom, more strategies, more people know-how?

Ready for Success? Call or e-mail Harvey and see if coaching will assist you in making this your best year yet.
